"What Is Spiritual Life Coaching?"

Whenever I mention that I'm a spiritual life coach, I usually receive one of three responses.

People either say,

"So...you're a counselor?"

"No."

"Oh...so you're a pastor?"

"No."

"Well...what exactly do you do?"

That's a wonderful question.

Because although many people have heard of life coaching, far fewer have heard of spiritual life coaching. Spiritual Life Coaching is not Bible study, counseling, therapy, or simply having someone pray for you. It is a sacred space for noticing God, listening more deeply to yourself, and learning to make life decisions from within.

Spiritual Life Coaching helps you navigate questions of personal growth, purpose, and fulfillment by paying attention to the deeper spiritual dimensions of life that are often overlooked. As you foster a deeper connection with God, you begin to better understand your spiritual identity and learn to live a life rooted in purpose, guided by faith, and marked by meaningful relationships with God, yourself, and others.

We Live in a World Focused on Doing

Much of our culture asks questions like...

What are your goals?

What's your five-year plan?

How can you become more productive?

How can you achieve more?

Those aren't bad questions. They're very necessary. But they aren't the deepest questions. Because it's possible to accomplish everything on your list while neglecting your soul.

Jesus once asked, "What does it profit a person to gain the whole world and lose their soul?" Luke 9(TPT): “Even if you gained all the wealth and power of this world and all the things it could offer you, yet lost your soul in the process, what good is that? That question still deserves our attention throughout our journey.

Let me give you a snapshot of Life Coaching

Life coaching is valuable.

It helps people clarify what they want.

It helps them create plans.

Breaks large goals into smaller steps.

Increases accountability.

Develops confidence.

Life coaching often asks, "What do you want to accomplish?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these questions or approach.

Spiritual Life Coaching Begins Somewhere Else

Spiritual life coaching asks a different question.

Before asking, "What do you want to do?" It asks, What is God doing?" Think about that.

Sometimes we're so busy trying to figure out the next move that we forget to ask whether God is already moving, and do we notice how He's moving? Spiritual Life Coaching doesn't extend the invitation to work harder, but to notice more and follow God where He's working.

God speaks in ordinary moments, and we sometimes miss it.

One of my favorite maxims is that God rarely limits Himself to dramatic moments.

Sometimes we expect burning bushes. Meanwhile... God whispers through ordinary Thursdays. A conversation.  A disappointment.   A closed door.  A restless feeling.   Unexpected joy. And even silence.  Spiritual life coaching creates room to notice those holy moments in our lives.

We Often Miss God Because We Rush to meet targets, deadlines, and goals.

A spiritual life coach asks about how you notice or pay attention to God.

Don’t misunderstand me; those things are part of life, but living in that rhythm of rush is not conducive to noticing God.

I wonder how often we ask God for direction and then never slow down long enough to hear Him.

We move from meeting...

to errands...

to social media...

to television...

to sleep.

Then we wonder why God seems distant.   Maybe He isn't distant.   Maybe we're distracted.

A Spiritual Life Coach Doesn't Tell You What God Said.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.   People sometimes think a spiritual coach tells them what God wants them to know. No. That's not my role.  I don't hand people answers from God. I don't make decisions for them. I don't predict God's will.

Instead...

I become a companion to you on your journey of spiritual growth and transformation.

I listen deeply.  I ask evocative questions, deep questions that one has to sit with and ponder. I help people notice patterns in their lives. Notice invitations things that God might be inviting them to. Notice resistance, where they’re resisting life and God.

Notice where they experience peace.  Notice where things feel unsettling.

Over time, people begin recognizing God's voice with greater confidence.

Not because I spoke louder. But because they learned to listen more carefully.

John 10:27 TPT says, "My own sheep will hear my voice, and I know each one, and they follow me." That is the crux, or central most important point of Spiritual Life Coaching.

Sometimes the Greatest Miracle Is Clarity

Many people come looking for answers. But what  God often gives is clarity instead.

There's a difference.  Sometimes He doesn't immediately change our circumstances.

He changes our perspective. Sometimes the miracle isn't an open door.  It's becoming the kind of person who can faithfully wait outside a closed one.

Spiritual life coaching is less about finding quick answers and more about learning to recognize God's quiet invitations.

What Happens in a Session

People often ask me what actually happens during spiritual life coaching.

We talk. We notice. We pray. We reflect. Sometimes we sit quietly. Sometimes we journal.

Sometimes there’s Lectio Divina or Divine reading, which is a spiritual practice. It’s a way of reading and praying with scripture. Scripture comes alive in a completely unexpected way.

Many times folk leave their sessions saying things like "I've never thought about my life like that." Not because I gave profound advice. But because they finally carved out time to pay attention and listen.

An Invitation...

Perhaps you've been carrying questions.

Questions about purpose.

Calling.

Transition.

Grief.

Caregiving.

Leadership.

Relationships.

Maybe you don't need another person telling you what to do. Maybe you need someone who will sit beside you while you listen for what God is already saying.

Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”

Prov. 3:5-6"Trust in the Lord completely and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart, rely on Him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make. Become intimate with him in whatever you do, and he will lead you wherever you go.

That's the heart of spiritual life coaching.

Closing Reflection

I want to leave you with this thought; some might consider it a bit radical depending on your formation. But I am offering this consideration. God has never stopped speaking. God always speaks. The deeper question is...

"Am I creating enough space to notice?"

Maybe this week simply ask,

"God, what have You already been trying to show me?"  You just may be surprised by what you've overlooked. Thank you for visiting my blog. Until next time...

Continue making room for holy conversations, because the most important conversation you'll ever have is the quiet one between you and God.
